Restaurant Greuze (and the Greuze Legacy)
Tournus punches far above its weight gastronomically, and the name Greuze is the reason why. The legendary chef Jean Ducloux ran Restaurant Greuze for decades, earning three Michelin stars and mentoring a generation of French chefs, and the address at 1 Rue Albert Thibaudet remains a pilgrimage for serious food lovers.
A Living Monument to Classic Cuisine
The current iteration of Greuze continues the tradition of refined Burgundian cooking: quenelles de brochet in a rich Nantua sauce, frogs' legs sautéed in garlic butter, and the kind of wine list that makes you want to cancel your afternoon plans. The dining room retains its bourgeois elegance — white linen, silver service, unhurried pacing.
Even if a full tasting menu is beyond your budget, the set lunch menu offers remarkable value for the quality and heritage on offer. Booking several weeks ahead is strongly advised, particularly in summer.
Beyond Greuze: Eating Well in Tournus
For a more casual meal, Le Terminus on Avenue Gambetta serves honest Burgundian bistro food — œufs en meurette, andouillette, and a rotating plat du jour — at prices that won't require a second mortgage. The terrace overlooks the old town and is perfect for a long, wine-lubricated lunch.
The town's boulangeries are also worth seeking out for a morning pain aux noix or a slice of gâteau de Savoie. Look for the independent bakery on Rue du Docteur Privey, whose sourdough loaves are baked in a wood-fired oven and sell out before 10 am on weekends.
