Ruta del Ferro – Abandoned Iron Trail, Salas
Threading along the banks of a tributary of the Narcea near Salas, the Ruta del Ferro follows the ghost of a 19th-century iron-smelting industry through a landscape of ruined forges, mossy millstones and lush riparian woodland. It is almost entirely unknown outside the region and utterly enchanting.
Forges, Watermills and Silence
The route takes its name from the old ferrerías — water-powered iron forges — that once lined these river valleys, using the fast-flowing streams to drive bellows and hammers. Several ruins survive in varying states of romantic decay: stone walls swallowed by ivy, millraces still channelling water, and the occasional intact arch reflected in a clear pool.
The industrial archaeology is fascinating, but what makes this walk special is the sensory experience: the sound of running water is constant, the path is soft with leaf litter, and the canopy closes overhead to create a green tunnel effect that photographers will love.
Planning Your Walk
The trail is waymarked but not heavily promoted, so download a track from Wikiloc or a similar app before you go — the signage can be intermittent. The full route runs approximately 8 kilometres return and involves minimal elevation change, making it suitable for most fitness levels.
The best time to visit is spring, when the riverside vegetation is vivid green and water levels are high enough to make the old millraces dramatic. Autumn is a close second for colour. Wear waterproof boots — the path crosses the stream several times on stepping stones that can be slippery.
