Marché de Saint-Omer — Place du Maréchal Foch
Every Saturday morning, the broad square in front of the cathedral transforms into one of the most authentic weekly markets in the Pas-de-Calais, drawing farmers, cheesemakers and charcutiers from across the Audomarois marshlands. Arrive hungry and leave with a basket full of things you didn't know you needed.
What to look for on the stalls
The Audomarois is one of the last regions in France where market gardening is still done by boat, and you'll see the results here: fat cauliflowers, heritage carrots and seasonal greens grown on the floating gardens of the watergangs arrive fresh each week.
Local cheeses from nearby Flanders and Artois sit alongside slabs of andouille, terrines of rillettes and jars of dark, sticky Flemish beer syrup — the kind of produce that tastes intensely of place.
The rhythm of a real local market
Unlike the sanitised farmers' markets of bigger cities, this one is genuinely utilitarian — stall-holders shout prices, locals argue good-naturedly over the best endives, and the smell of roasting chickens drifts across the square from a rotisserie van that has been in the same spot for decades.
A ring of café terraces around the square means you can buy a coffee, sit in the sun and watch the whole theatre of it from the best possible seat.
