Croix de Véroce Panorama
A short hike above the village rewards you with one of the most unobstructed face-on views of Mont Blanc in the entire Haute-Savoie. At 1,760 m, the iron cross marks a grassy ridge where the white pyramid of Europe's highest peak fills the entire horizon.
The Climb Up
The path departs from the church square in Saint-Nicolas-de-Véroce and gains roughly 200 m of elevation over a well-marked trail through alpine meadows. Even in summer trainers will do, though proper walking shoes are more comfortable on the rocky final stretch.
Sunrise is the magic hour: alpenglow turns the Bionnassay and Dôme du Goûter glaciers a molten orange while the valley below is still draped in blue shadow. Arrive 20 minutes before official sunrise for the full show.
What You See From the Top
The panorama sweeps from the Aiguilles Rouges to the left, past the full Mont Blanc massif centre-stage, and across to the Aravis chain on the right — a 180-degree arc of peaks above 3,000 m.
On clear days you can spot the Aiguille du Midi cable-car station with the naked eye, and the thin silver thread of the Mer de Glace glacier glinting in the afternoon light.
Practical Notes
The round trip from the village takes 1.5 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace. The cross itself is a popular local pilgrimage point and is illuminated on certain feast days in August, creating an eerie golden glow visible from the valley floor.
