Mirador del Cerro de San Sebastián
Rising above the western edge of Puertollano, the Cerro de San Sebastián is crowned by a small hermitage and a natural mirador that rewards the easy uphill walk with sweeping views across the city's industrial silhouette, the surrounding plains and, on clear days, the distant ridgeline of the Sierra Madrona to the south. It is the best place to understand Puertollano's geography at a glance.
The View and the Hermitage
From the summit, the contrast between Puertollano's industrial infrastructure — the refinery chimneys, the solar-panel fields, the railway yards — and the vast emptiness of the Manchegan plain beyond is genuinely striking and photogenic in a way that generic countryside viewpoints rarely are. Golden hour before sunset turns the whole scene amber and soft.
The whitewashed Ermita de San Sebastián at the top is a simple, ancient chapel that locals have climbed to for centuries. It is usually locked except during the saint's feast day in January, but the exterior and its setting are worth the walk regardless.
Getting There and Combining the Visit
A well-marked footpath from the neighbourhood of San Sebastián at the city's edge reaches the summit in around 20–25 minutes of gentle climbing. The path is rocky in places, so wear proper shoes rather than sandals.
Combine the viewpoint visit with a walk through the adjacent Parque de San Sebastián, a pleasant green space with mature pine trees that is popular with local families on weekend mornings and provides welcome shade on warm days.
