Bosco di Rossomanno–Grottascura–Bellia Regional Nature Reserve
Just 8 km north of Piazza Armerina, this 4,500-hectare regional reserve protects one of the largest surviving ancient oak and holm-oak forests in Sicily — a landscape so dense and quiet that it feels like a different planet from the crowded coastal resorts. Deer, porcupines and short-toed eagles live here undisturbed.
Trails and Terrain
The main forest track from the Rossomanno picnic area loops for roughly 7 km through cathedral-like stands of centuries-old Quercus cerris, their bark furrowed like elephant skin. The path is well-worn but not formally waymarked, so download an offline GPX track from Wikiloc before you set out.
In spring (March–May) the forest floor erupts with wild orchids, cyclamen and asphodels. Autumn brings the sweet, fungal smell of porcini mushrooms — locals gather here on weekend mornings with baskets, though foraging requires a regional permit.
Grottascura and the Rock Shelters
On the reserve's eastern edge, the Grottascura area contains a cluster of prehistoric rock shelters carved into sandstone bluffs, with faint Neolithic engravings that most visitors walk straight past. A local guide from the Piazza Armerina tourist office can point them out — the carvings are subtle but extraordinary.
The reserve's highest point, near Monte Altesina (1,192 m), offers a 360-degree view that on exceptional days reaches Etna to the east and the Madonie peaks to the north. The summit track branches off the main forest road and adds about 4 km return.
