Trattoria del Camino

Tucked into a vaulted medieval room on Via Cappuccini in Narni's historic centre, Trattoria del Camino has been feeding locals and knowing travellers for decades with no-nonsense Umbrian cooking built around seasonal produce and the wood-burning fireplace that gives the restaurant its name. This is where Narni eats on Sunday.

What to order

Start with the bruschetta drizzled in peppery local DOP olive oil and the cured meats board featuring hand-sliced norcineria from the Valnerina. The pasta course is non-negotiable: stringozzi al tartufo nero (thick hand-rolled spaghetti with black truffle shaved tableside) is the signature dish and worth every euro.

For secondi, the piccione arrosto — wood-roasted pigeon with juniper and wild herbs — is a polarising but deeply traditional Umbrian choice. If game is not your thing, the slow-braised lamb with rosemary and white wine is equally honest and delicious.

The wine and the room

The short wine list leans heavily on Umbrian bottles: look for a Montefalco Rosso DOC to pair with the truffle pasta or a chilled Grechetto with the antipasti. House wine arrives in a ceramic jug and is perfectly drinkable.

The dining room itself — stone walls, terracotta floor, copper pots hanging above the fire — is as atmospheric as the food. Book a table by the fireplace in winter; in summer a handful of tables spill onto the narrow cobbled lane outside.
