S'Albufera des Grau Natural Park & Lagoon

The Lagoon and Bird Life
The lagoon (albufera in Catalan) is the largest on the island and sits just behind a narrow sandbar that separates it from the open sea. A network of flat, well-marked trails loops around the water's edge, through reed beds and cork oak groves, covering between 3 and 8 kilometres depending on which circuit you choose. The terrain is easy and suitable for all fitness levels.
Autumn and spring migration seasons (March–May and September–November) bring the greatest bird diversity, with dozens of wader species stopping over alongside the resident flamingos and breeding ospreys. The park's visitor centre at the lagoon entrance has a free identification guide and a viewing platform with telescopes trained on the flamingo roost.
Es Grau Village and the Beach
At the northern end of the park, the tiny whitewashed village of Es Grau has a sheltered, almost perfectly circular bay with calm, shallow turquoise water — ideal for swimming with young children. The beach is backed by pine trees rather than sunbeds and parasol rentals, and the village has just two or three small restaurants serving fresh fish caught that morning.
The combination of lagoon walk, beach swim and lunch at one of the Es Grau waterfront restaurants makes for a near-perfect Menorcan day out. Bar Restaurant Es Grau is the most established option and serves a reliable arròs de marisc (seafood rice) that uses lagoon-adjacent shellfish.
Getting There and Visiting Tips
The park visitor centre (Centre de Recepció de s'Albufera des Grau) is on the Me-5 road north of Maó, well signposted. Driving takes about 15 minutes from the city centre; there is a free car park at the trailhead. No public bus runs directly to the park, so a rental car, taxi or bicycle is necessary.
The park is open year-round and entry is free. Summer mornings before 9 a.m. are the coolest and quietest time to walk; by midday in July and August the exposed lagoon path becomes very hot. Bring water, sunscreen and binoculars — the park does not have a café on site.
