Luang Prabang Night Market

Every evening from around 5 pm, Sisavangvong Road transforms into a kilometre-long corridor of hand-stitched textiles, silver jewellery, and paper lanterns as the Luang Prabang Night Market comes alive. It is the best place in Laos to buy directly from Hmong and Lao artisans at fair prices.

What to Buy

The market is famous for indigo-dyed textiles, hand-woven silk scarves, and embroidered bags made by hill-tribe women from surrounding villages. Look for the intricate patching work on Hmong quilts — each geometric pattern carries a specific cultural meaning.

Silver jewellery stalls cluster near the northern end of the market. Prices are negotiable but not aggressively so; a polite smile and a counter-offer of around 70–80% of the asking price is the norm.

Food Stalls and the Street Food Corner

Behind the main textile strip, a cluster of food stalls near the Mekong-end of the market sells grilled corn, mango sticky rice, and fresh spring rolls for pocket change. A plate of khao jee — baguette with Lao-style pâté, a French colonial legacy — costs around 10,000 LAK.

The covered food market on Kitsalat Road, one block parallel, serves a hot buffet of Lao curries and stir-fries where you fill a plate for a flat fee of roughly USD 1.50 — a favourite with budget travellers and locals alike.
