Mercado Municipal de Abastos de Jumilla
Jumilla's covered municipal market sits just off the main shopping street and operates with the unhurried rhythm of a town that still buys its food daily. Arrive before 10 am and you'll find stalls piled with locally grown tomatoes, peppers, fresh almonds and the region's prized artichokes.
What to look for inside
The market is small enough to walk in five minutes but dense with character. The fruit and vegetable stalls lead with seasonal produce from the Jumilla plain — look for ñoras (small dried red peppers essential to Murcian cooking) hanging in strings, and trays of fresh figs in late summer.
The butcher stalls stock locally raised lamb and kid goat, the basis of the region's most celebrated dish, cordero al ajillo. A couple of fish counters receive daily deliveries from the Mediterranean coast, just 90 kilometres away.
Eating and chatting your way around
A small bar tucked inside the market serves a working-man's breakfast of coffee and a tostada con tomate for under €2. Sit at the counter and watch the stallholders take their mid-morning break — it is the most authentic slice of daily Jumilla life you will find.
Pick up a wedge of local Murcia al vino cheese, rubbed in red wine until the rind turns violet, and a handful of roasted salted almonds grown on the surrounding slopes. Wrapped in paper, they make a perfect picnic to take up to the castle.
