Iwokrama River Lodge & Canopy Walkway
Suspended 30 metres above the forest floor in the heart of the 371,000-hectare Iwokrama International Centre, the canopy walkway at Iwokrama River Lodge gives you a perspective on Guyana's rainforest that almost no traveller ever sees — and the nocturnal wildlife spotlight walks from the lodge rank among the best in South America. This is eco-tourism done with genuine scientific purpose.
The Canopy Walkway at Dawn
The 154-metre walkway sways gently as you walk, the forest canopy spreading in every direction to an unbroken green horizon. At first light, red howler monkeys announce the day from the emergent trees, harpy eagles are occasionally spotted riding thermals overhead, and the air smells of wet bark and orchid.
Eight platforms at different heights mean you can pause and scan at canopy level — binoculars are essential. Your Makushi guide will name every bird call before you see the bird, which makes the whole experience feel like a masterclass rather than a stroll.
Night Walks & River Wildlife
After dark, the lodge guides take small groups along the forest road with spotlights, finding giant river otters, tapirs, caimans and an almost absurd density of tree frogs. The black caiman spotlighting by boat on the Essequibo River is a particular highlight — the red eyes of a two-metre caiman glowing back from the dark water is something you won't forget quickly.
Iwokrama is a four-to-five hour drive south of Georgetown on the Linden-Lethem Road, or accessible by charter flight. The lodge itself is simple but comfortable, with open-air dining on the river bank and extremely good birding from the breakfast table.
