Santimamiñe Cave & Prehistoric Paintings
Hidden inside a limestone hillside just 5 km from Gernika, the Santimamiñe Cave contains some of the finest Palaeolithic rock art on the Iberian Peninsula — bison, bears, horses and deer painted with startling skill up to 15,000 years ago. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most undervisited prehistoric sites in Europe.
The Cave and Its Art
The original paintings are preserved in situ and access to the deepest chambers is tightly restricted to protect them, but the site runs an excellent guided tour that combines a short walk into the accessible cave entrance with a sophisticated 3D projection room where the paintings are rendered at full scale and in extraordinary detail. The technology is genuinely impressive and gives a better sense of the art than squinting at it by torchlight.
The bison panel, the centrepiece of the collection, shows a group of animals painted with confident, flowing lines that feel astonishingly modern. Seeing them — even in projection — stops most visitors mid-sentence.
The Forest Walk Above
The cave sits within a protected oak forest that is itself worth the journey. A waymarked trail loops from the cave car park through ancient Cantabrian oak woodland and past a reconstructed Neolithic settlement (complete with a replica megalithic dolmen) before returning to the valley floor. The whole loop takes about 45 minutes and is suitable for families.
The surrounding area, known as Oma, is also home to the famous 'Painted Forest' of sculptor Agustín Ibarrola — a living art installation where the trunks of hundreds of pine trees have been painted with geometric and figurative murals that align into larger images as you walk through. It is free to visit and utterly unlike anything else in the Basque Country.
