Bastei Rock Formation, Saxon Switzerland
Rising 194 metres above the Elbe River in Saxon Switzerland National Park, the Bastei is a cluster of ancient sandstone pillars connected by a narrow stone bridge that has been drawing awe-struck visitors since the Romantic era — Caspar David Friedrich painted it, and it is easy to see why. The views from the bridge across forested gorges, river bends and distant Czech peaks are among the most dra
The Bridge and the Viewpoints
The Basteibrücke, a sandstone arch bridge built in 1851, links the main rock pillars and is the centrepiece of the site. Walk across it slowly — the drop to the Elbe below is vertiginous and the views change with every step. The ruins of Felsenburg Neurathen, a medieval rock fortress built directly into the sandstone spires, are accessible from the bridge for a €2 fee and add a layer of history to the geology.
The best light arrives in the early morning when mist fills the Elbe valley below the rocks and the spires glow amber. Sunrise here in late September and October, when the forest is turning, is genuinely extraordinary and worth an overnight stay in the nearby village of Rathen.
Hiking in Saxon Switzerland
The Bastei is the headline act of Saxon Switzerland National Park, but the 400 km of marked trails around it deserve equal attention. The Malerweg (Painters' Way), an 116 km long-distance route, passes through the park and was walked by the Romantic painters who made this landscape famous in the early 19th century. Day-hikers can tackle the 12 km circular trail from Rathen that takes in the Bastei, the Schwedenlöcher ravine and the Amselfall waterfall.
The park sits on the German-Czech border, and the town of Bad Schandau (accessible by ferry and S-Bahn from Dresden) makes a practical base with good accommodation and direct trail access. Dresden itself is only 45 minutes away by S-Bahn, making a day trip very feasible.
