Møns Klint, Island of Møn

Møns Klint is one of the most startling natural sights in northern Europe — a six-kilometre wall of brilliant white chalk cliffs rising up to 128 metres straight out of the turquoise Baltic Sea. Formed by glacial pressure some 70 million years ago, the cliffs are embedded with fossilised sea creatures that wash out onto the beach below after storms, making every visit feel like a treasure hunt.

The cliffs and the forest above

The clifftop trail through the ancient beech forest of Klinteskoven is one of the finest coastal walks in Denmark, with viewpoints appearing suddenly through the trees to reveal vertiginous drops to the sea below. The most dramatic single viewpoint is Dronningestolen (the Queen's Chair), where the chalk face plunges nearly 120 metres to a narrow pebble beach.

The GeoCenter Møns Klint, perched right on the clifftop, is an excellent modern geology museum that explains how the cliffs formed and what fossils to look for — it's worth an hour even if you're not a science enthusiast, and the building itself has a dramatic cantilevered walkway over the forest.

The beach, fossils and dark skies

A long wooden staircase (around 500 steps) descends to the beach at Storeklint, where you can walk along the base of the cliffs and hunt for belemnites, sea urchins and shark teeth embedded in the chalk boulders. The beach is pebbly rather than sandy but the colour contrast between the white chalk and the green-blue water is extraordinary.

Møn is also one of the darkest-sky areas in Denmark, certified as an International Dark Sky Community. On clear nights the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye — the clifftop meadows and the beach below make perfect stargazing spots far from city light pollution.
