Chengdu's Sichuan Peppercorn Alley — Songxianqiao Antique Market
Songxianqiao Antique Market in Chengdu is a sprawling, atmospheric bazaar where jade carvings, Mao-era memorabilia, vintage porcelain and Tibetan thangka paintings share space with street food stalls and calligraphy artists at work. It is the kind of place where you could lose an entire morning and not regret a minute.
What you will find inside
The market occupies a large open-air compound near the Chengdu Cultural Park and draws both serious collectors and casual browsers. Stalls spill across covered arcades and open courtyards, selling everything from Qing-dynasty coins and Cultural Revolution posters to hand-knotted rugs and celadon ceramics.
Tibetan artefacts are particularly well represented here — look for singing bowls, prayer wheels and painted wooden furniture brought down from Kangding and Litang. Prices are negotiable, and bargaining respectfully is expected and enjoyed.
Making the most of your visit
Arrive early on a weekend morning when the full complement of vendors is set up and the light is soft. A cup of strong Sichuan tea from one of the courtyard teahouses makes the perfect browsing companion.
The market sits adjacent to Chengdu Cultural Park, so you can combine a visit with a stroll through the park where locals practise tai chi, play mahjong and sing Sichuan opera arias — a vivid slice of everyday Chengdu life.
Songxianqiao is open daily from around 9 am to 6 pm. Entry is free. It is about 4 km west of Tianfu Square and easily reached by metro Line 4 to Chengdu Cultural Park station.
