Valle del Elqui, Coquimbo Region

Tucked into the arid folds of the Atacama's southern fringe, the Elqui Valley is a narrow ribbon of green vineyards and papaya orchards flanked by bone-dry mountains — and it sits beneath what astronomers confirm is one of the clearest night skies on the planet. Pisco Distilleries and Village Life

The village of Pisco Elqui (formerly La Unión) is the valley's most picturesque settlement — a cluster of adobe walls, a pretty colonial plaza and the landmark Los Nichos pisco distillery where you can tour the copper pot stills and taste single-varietal Moscatel piscos that never make it out of Chile. The nearby Capel cooperative distillery in Vicuña offers a more industrial-scale tour with a comprehensive tasting bar.

Vicuña, the valley's main town, houses the Gabriela Mistral Museum in a terracotta building dedicated to the life of Chile's most celebrated poet. It's small, personal and unexpectedly moving — her handwritten manuscripts and Nobel medal sit behind glass in rooms that feel more like a family home than a formal institution.

Stargazing in the Southern Hemisphere

The Elqui Valley hosts several world-class observatories including the Observatorio Cerro Mamalluca outside Vicuña, which runs nightly public tours with powerful telescopes pointed at the Magellanic Clouds, Saturn's rings and the dense star fields of the Milky Way's galactic core — all invisible from the northern hemisphere at this clarity.

Book a night at one of the valley's astro-lodges — Elqui Domos near Pisco Elqui offers transparent-domed tents with beds oriented for stargazing from the pillow — and you'll understand immediately why the European Southern Observatory chose this corner of Chile for its most sensitive instruments. The silence and the sky together are overwhelming.
