Pidapipó Lab & the Carlton Gardens Picnic Circuit

Melburnians have a ritual that visitors rarely know about: grab a cup of slow-churned gelato from Pidapipó Lab on Lygon Street, then disappear into Carlton Gardens for a long, unhurried picnic under the Moreton Bay figs. It costs almost nothing, and it is one of the most genuinely pleasurable hours the city offers.

The Gelato That Started It All

Pidapipó was founded in 2014 as an offshoot of the historic King & Godfree deli on Lygon Street, and it quickly became Melbourne's benchmark for artisan gelato. The texture is the talking point — dense, slow-churned and completely free of ice crystals — and the flavour range moves from Italian classics like hazelnut, pistachio and bacio to more adventurous seasonal specials.

The flagship store at 299 Lygon Street almost always has a queue, but it moves fast. Order a cup rather than a cone so you can carry it comfortably into the gardens. Hot Nutella on tap is the local's order on a cool afternoon; on a hot day, the salted caramel is the one.

The Perfect Carlton Afternoon Circuit

From Pidapipó, it is a five-minute walk east along Grattan Street to the southern gates of Carlton Gardens. Find a spot under one of the enormous Moreton Bay fig trees, spread out on the grass beside the ornamental fountain, and let the afternoon dissolve. The Royal Exhibition Building frames the view to the north — a UNESCO World Heritage backdrop for a $10 gelato.

The gardens also have an award-winning children's playground, a tennis club with bookable courts, and the IMAX Melbourne cinema for when the weather turns. In spring, the flower beds around the central fountain are in full bloom — this is when the picnic circuit is at its absolute best.

Timing & Local Tips

Visit on a weekday afternoon to avoid weekend crowds around Pidapipó. The gardens are at their most beautiful in October and November when spring flowers are out and the light is long and golden. Sunset from the northern end of the gardens, looking back toward the city skyline, is one of Carlton's most underrated viewpoints.

Pack a bottle from King & Godfree (380 Lygon St), one of Melbourne's oldest delicatessens and bottle shops, to turn the picnic into a proper occasion. The staff are knowledgeable and the wine list leans heavily into small Victorian producers.
