Riserva Naturale di Torre Guaceto
Twenty kilometres north of Brindisi, where the Adriatic meets a protected marine reserve, Torre Guaceto is the antidote to overdeveloped Italian beach resorts. A WWF nature reserve since 1991, it combines a pristine sandy beach, a coastal wetland rich in flamingos and herons, ancient olive groves, and a 16th-century watchtower — all within a single morning's visit.
The Beach and the Marine Reserve
The beach at Torre Guaceto is one of the few stretches of Apulian coastline where the sea floor is genuinely protected — no motorboats, no anchoring, strictly controlled access. The result is water of extraordinary clarity, with posidonia seagrass meadows visible through the surface and octopus and sea bream visible to snorkellers without even trying.
The beach is divided into a free public section and a small managed section; arrive early in summer (before 09:00) to secure a spot on the free stretch. The water is shallow and calm for the first 50 metres, making it ideal for families.
The Wetland and the Walking Trails
Behind the dunes, the WWF reserve manages a freshwater and brackish lagoon that attracts flamingos, purple herons, and dozens of migratory wader species on the spring and autumn flyways. A network of signed walking trails (the longest is about 8 km) winds through the macchia mediterranea scrubland and past gnarled centuries-old olive trees.
The 16th-century Torre Guaceto watchtower, built by the Knights of Malta to watch for Ottoman raids, crowns a low headland at the northern end of the beach and provides a modest but satisfying panorama over the reserve and the Adriatic. The reserve visitor centre near the car park provides free maps and trail information.
