Carlisle Bay

Carlisle Bay is Bridgetown's own backyard paradise — a crescent-shaped natural harbour where the water is so clear you can count the fish from the surface, and six historic shipwrecks lie just metres below for snorkellers and divers to explore. Best of all, it's completely free.

Above the Water

Carlisle Bay's beach — split between Bayshore Beach and the more sheltered Pebbles Beach — offers soft white sand, calm water perfect for swimming, and a string of bars and restaurants along its border where you can order a rum punch and watch pelicans dive.

The bay is part of a UNESCO-designated Marine Park, which has helped keep its waters extraordinarily clear; parrotfish, stingrays, and sea turtles are regular visitors, and the beach is fully open to the public with no entry fee — a rarity among prime Caribbean spots.

Below the Surface

Six shipwrecks rest in the shallow, sheltered waters of Carlisle Bay, making it one of the most accessible wreck-diving and snorkelling sites in the Eastern Caribbean — several operators based right on the beach run guided dives and snorkel trips at reasonable prices.

Even without gear, the water is calm and clear enough for a long, lazy swim; the bay's sheltered position means it stays swimmable year-round, unlike the more exposed Atlantic east coast.

Pebbles Beach at Dawn: A Local Secret

Arrive at Pebbles Beach just after sunrise and you may witness one of Barbados' most surreal morning rituals: racehorses from local stables being walked into the sea to exercise and cool down, their handlers wading alongside in the shallows — a scene that has played out here for decades.

Carlisle Bay is only a 10-minute walk from the Careenage and about 30 minutes from the airport, making it the easiest possible add-on to any Bridgetown day.
