Océanopolis Marine Discovery Park
Océanopolis is not a standard aquarium — it is one of Europe's most ambitious marine science parks, built on the edge of the Port de Plaisance du Moulin Blanc and dedicated entirely to ocean ecosystems. With three climate-specific pavilions covering polar, tropical and temperate Atlantic environments, it earns a full half-day from even the most seasoned traveller.
Three Pavilions, Three Worlds
The Temperate Pavilion is the heart of the experience, showcasing the biodiversity of the Iroise Sea and the Rade de Brest with floor-to-ceiling tanks where conger eels, John Dory and enormous turbot drift past at arm's length. The 1,000-cubic-metre main tank is one of the largest in France dedicated to a temperate Atlantic ecosystem.
The Polar Pavilion is where children lose their minds: a colony of king and gentoo penguins waddles around a refrigerated enclosure while harbour seals torpedo through an adjacent tank. The scientific displays on Arctic ice melt are sobering but presented with admirable clarity.
Beyond the Tanks
The Tropical Pavilion houses a genuine coral reef tank with blacktip reef sharks, lionfish and clouds of anthias, all maintained at 26°C. The touch pools in this section let you handle sea urchins and starfish under the guidance of marine educators.
Océanopolis also runs serious scientific research programs, and on certain days you can join a guided backstage tour to see the breeding and rehabilitation facilities. Check the website for the feeding shows schedule — the seal feeding at 15:00 is reliably spectacular.
