Hemenway Park & Bighorn Sheep Viewing

Hemenway Park is one of the most surreal wildlife encounters in the American West — a tidy public park where a resident herd of desert bighorn sheep strolls down from the surrounding hills every single day to graze on the grass, utterly unbothered by delighted onlookers. Lake Mead glitters in the background, making every photo look like a postcard.

The Bighorn Herd

Hemenway Park, situated just outside Boulder City close to Hoover Dam, draws a herd of bighorn sheep from the nearby hills daily to munch on the lawn and rest in the shade of the trees. The animals are remarkably accustomed to human presence — you can watch rams, ewes, and lambs from just a few metres away.

Nevada has used this herd as a conservation cornerstone since 1967, helping grow the state's bighorn population from fewer than 3,000 animals to more than 12,000 today. Watching them up close feels both thrilling and quietly meaningful.

The Setting & Lake Mead Views

The park sits on a hillside with sweeping views down towards Lake Mead National Recreation Area, so you get desert wildlife and a vast blue reservoir in a single frame. Early mornings and late afternoons are when the sheep are most reliably present and the light is softest for photography.

Pack a picnic — the park has shaded benches and a relaxed, local-neighbourhood atmosphere that is a world away from the Las Vegas Strip just 30 miles up the road. Roadrunners and coyotes are also occasionally spotted on the fringes.

Combining with Lake Mead

Hemenway Park sits at the gateway to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, which covers 1.5 million acres of desert, canyon, and reservoir terrain. From here it is a short drive to Boulder Beach for swimming and kayaking, or to the trailhead for the Historic Railroad Trail.

The Lake Mead day-use fee is $25 per vehicle and covers seven days of access — excellent value if you plan to hike, boat, and explore multiple spots around the reservoir.
