Castello Malaspina & Church of Nostra Signora di Regnos Altos

Perched on Serravalle Hill, Castello Malaspina is the one place in Bosa you simply cannot skip. Climb its ancient walls and you'll be rewarded with 360-degree views over terracotta rooftops, the silver ribbon of the Temo River, and the shimmering Sardinian sea.

A Castle Born in 1112

Built by the Malaspina family after they relocated from Tuscany, the castle has stood sentinel over Bosa for more than nine centuries. While much of the original structure has eroded to atmospheric walls and watchtowers, the sheer scale of the fortifications still commands respect.

Hidden inside the castle precinct is the Church of Nostra Signora di Regnos Altos, a small jewel containing a rare cycle of 14th- and 15th-century frescoes that somehow survived the centuries intact. Art historians consider them among the finest medieval paintings in Sardinia.

The View That Justifies Everything

From the summit you look straight down onto the candy-coloured rooftops of Sa Costa, watch the Temo wind through its valley, and on clear days spot the coastline stretching north toward Alghero. Sunrise and sunset are both spectacular — the warm light turns the pastel town into something almost unreal.

The climb through the winding alleys of the old town is half the pleasure. Follow the hand-painted signs uphill through Sa Costa, stopping to photograph flower-draped doorways and elderly locals on stone benches — the castle reveals itself gradually, which makes arriving all the more satisfying.
