Minchery Farm Local Nature Reserve

Tucked behind Blackbird Leys and almost unknown to visitors, Minchery Farm Local Nature Reserve is a genuine surprise: a mosaic of wet meadows, scrub and a medieval fishpond that was once part of a 12th-century Augustinian priory.

History buried in the landscape

The earthworks visible across the reserve are the remains of Littlemore Priory, a small Augustinian nunnery founded around 1110 and dissolved by Henry VIII in 1525 — making this quiet patch of south Oxford one of the oldest layered historical sites in the county.

The priory's fishponds, now reed-fringed and colonised by dragonflies, are clearly visible as rectangular depressions in the meadow. In summer, common darters and azure damselflies skim the water's surface in vivid flashes of red and blue.

Interpretation boards placed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust explain the site's ecology and history, but the reserve sees so few visitors that you will almost certainly have it to yourself on a weekday morning.

Wildlife watching through the seasons

Spring brings breeding lapwings to the wet meadow — a species that has vanished from much of lowland England — along with reed buntings singing from the top of the hawthorn scrub.

In summer the uncut meadow grass hosts grasshoppers and common blue butterflies, and the hawthorn and blackthorn thickets provide cover for whitethroats and lesser whitethroats passing through on migration.

Autumn and winter are excellent for short-eared owls quartering the rough grass at dusk, and the flooded hollows attract snipe and the occasional jack snipe probing the mud — a remarkable wildlife spectacle within the city boundary.
