The Cube Viewpoint, Berea Park
Tucked inside a quiet park on the Berea ridge, The Cube is Durban's best-kept viewpoint secret — a giant three-dimensional public art installation that frames a jaw-dropping panorama of Moses Mabhida Stadium, the city skyline and, on clear days, the glittering Indian Ocean beyond. Most visitors walk straight past it; you won't make that mistake.
Art Meets Panorama
The Cube is exactly what it sounds like: a massive 3-D cube set into a park on the Berea, unveiled as a street-art mural in 2009 — a year before the FIFA World Cup brought the world to Durban. Its bold geometric form and painted murals make it a striking photographic subject in its own right, long before you look up and take in the view behind it.
From the vantage point beside The Cube, the white arch of Moses Mabhida Stadium dominates the foreground, with the Durban CBD spreading behind it and the Indian Ocean shimmering on the horizon. It is, as one regular visitor put it, a secret view point place — and the photos prove it.
When to Go & How to Find It
Early morning and late afternoon light are the golden hours here: the low sun catches the stadium arch and the city's glass towers, turning the whole scene into something cinematic. The spot is rarely crowded, which makes it feel like a discovery every time.
The Cube sits in a public park on the Berea, accessible on foot and free of charge. It doubles as a backdrop for the Essenwood and Musgrave Market on Saturdays, so you can combine both in a single morning.
