Rancho Primicias Giant Tortoise Reserve
At Rancho Primicias, Galápagos giant tortoises roam freely across open pasture as they have for millions of years — you simply walk among them, no fence between you and a creature that can weigh 250 kilograms and outlive your grandchildren. It is the most viscerally moving wildlife encounter the highlands of Santa Cruz can offer.
Free-roaming tortoises on open land
Rancho Primicias is one of two privately-owned highland reserves — alongside Reserva El Chato — where giant land tortoises wander at will across grassy terrain. The animals are completely wild and unmanaged; you follow marked paths through their territory rather than viewing them in any kind of enclosure.
The tortoises retreat to the cool, moist highlands during the dry-season months (roughly June to November), making this the prime period for sightings. During the wet season they migrate back down toward the coast, but a handful are usually present year-round.
The lava tunnel included on site
Rancho Primicias also includes access to an on-site lava tunnel that stretches approximately 400 metres underground and requires duck-walking or crawling through one narrow section — a genuine adventure that pairs perfectly with the tortoise walk above ground.
Rubber boots and a guide are provided by the ranch, and a small café serves drinks and snacks. The combination of open-air tortoise watching and underground lava exploration makes this the most complete single stop in the Bellavista highlands.
Logistics and what to bring
The reserve is located in the highlands just beyond Santa Rosa, about a 30-minute taxi ride from Puerto Ayora. Entrance costs approximately $10 per person, with the round-trip taxi adding around $60 for a shared vehicle.
Wear long trousers and bring insect repellent for the pasture sections. Photography is excellent in the early morning when soft highland light falls across the tortoises and the mist has not yet burned off.
