Les Bains du Couloubret
Ax-les-Thermes owes its very existence to hot sulphurous springs that bubble up at 77 °C, and the Bains du Couloubret is where locals and visitors have been taking the waters since the 13th century. Three outdoor pools of graduated temperature sit right in the heart of town, free to use and open year-round — a genuinely rare thing in Europe.
A medieval cure that never went out of fashion
The pools were originally built for soldiers returning wounded from the Crusades, commissioned by the Bishop of Pamiers in 1260. That history gives the place a weight that a modern spa simply cannot replicate — you are bathing in the same steaming water that eased the pain of medieval knights.
Today the Bassin des Ladres, the oldest of the three pools, is the hottest and most atmospheric, ringed by stone and open to the sky. Arrive early on a winter morning when mist rises off the water against a backdrop of snow-dusted peaks and you will understand immediately why this town exists.
Practical pleasures and the thermal circuit
Entry to the outdoor pools is completely free, which makes them one of the best-value experiences in the entire Pyrenees. Bring a towel, flip-flops and a willingness to chat — the pools are a genuine social hub where French grandmothers, ski instructors and hikers all share the same warm water.
If you want a more structured thermal experience, the Domaine Thermal d'Ax next door offers paid treatments, hammam sessions and hydrotherapy circuits. The combination of free outdoor soaking followed by a professional treatment makes for a perfect rest day between hikes or ski runs.
