Cairngorm Reindeer Herd, Glenmore
Hidden in a fold of the Cairngorm hills above Loch Morlich, Britain's only free-ranging reindeer herd has roamed these slopes since 1952, when Swedish Sámi reindeer herder Mikel Utsi introduced eight animals from Scandinavia. Today around 150 reindeer graze the high tops, and a daily guided hill trip lets you walk among them and feed them by hand.
The Daily Hill Trip
Every morning at 11:00 (with an additional 14:30 trip in summer), a Cairngorm Reindeer Centre guide leads a small group on a 20-minute uphill walk to wherever the herd is grazing that day — the location shifts with the seasons, so no two visits are quite the same.
Once among the herd, reindeer amble up with disarming confidence, nuzzling pockets for food pellets and occasionally resting a heavy antlered head on a shoulder. Calves born in May are the undisputed highlight of early-summer visits.
The guides are passionate and encyclopaedic — expect to leave knowing the difference between a bull's palmated antlers and a cow's, and why reindeer are the only deer species in which females also carry antlers.
The Reindeer Centre & Paddock Visit
If the hill walk feels too strenuous, a paddock visit at the centre itself (Reindeer House, Glenmore, PH22 1QU) allows close encounters without the climb — particularly good for families with young children or visitors with mobility considerations.
The small shop sells reindeer-themed gifts, and proceeds directly fund the herd's care — this is a working conservation project, not a theme park, and that ethos is palpable in every interaction.
Getting There & Combining with Glenmore
The Reindeer Centre sits 8 km east of Aviemore on the road through Glenmore village, easily combined with a walk around Loch Morlich — a sandy-shored freshwater loch that doubles as a surprisingly warm (by Highland standards) wild-swimming spot in July and August.
Glenmore has a well-stocked outdoor shop and a cosy café inside the Glenmore Visitor Centre run by Forestry and Land Scotland, making it a natural base for a full day in the forest.
Parking at the Reindeer Centre is free; the Cairngorm Ski Area car park 1 km further up the road also serves the area and is free out of ski season.
