Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria

Fitzroy is the neighbourhood that gave Melbourne its reputation as Australia's cultural capital — a tight grid of Victorian terraces, laneway murals, independent bookshops and some of the country's most inventive restaurants. Brunswick Street and Smith Street are its twin spines, and an afternoon wandering between them feels like a curated festival of local life.

Eating and Drinking Your Way Through

Breakfast at Proud Mary on Oxford Street is a pilgrimage for specialty-coffee obsessives — the rotating single-origin filter menu is taken as seriously as the food. For dinner, Cutler & Co on Gertrude Street delivers modern Australian fine dining inside a converted metal workshop, with a wine list that champions small Victorian producers.

The Rose Hotel on Fitzroy Street pours a reliably good schooner of local craft beer and has a sun-trap beer garden that fills up fast on Friday afternoons. Nearby, Naked for Satan on Brunswick Street invented the pintxos-and-rooftop-bar formula that half of Melbourne has since copied.

Art, Culture and Street Life

The NGV's off-site project space at the former Meat Market on Blackwood Street hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions that are always free and almost always worth your time. Gertrude Contemporary, a short walk away, is one of Australia's oldest artist-run spaces and champions genuinely experimental work.

Fitzroy's laneways — particularly around the intersection of Brunswick and Johnston Streets — are an open-air gallery of rotating street art. Keep an eye out for works by local legend Ghostpatrol and visiting international artists commissioned by the Juddy Roller agency.
