Marché du Samedi Matin, Place de la République

Every Saturday morning the broad Place de la République and surrounding streets transform into one of the liveliest weekly markets in the Gers, where farmers drive in from across the département with foie gras, armagnac, violet garlic, Gascon black pork and wheels of aged tome des Pyrénées. It is less touristy and more authentically local than the big Toulouse markets, which makes it all the more

What to Buy

The Gers is France's capital of foie gras, and here you can buy directly from producers who raise their own ducks — look for 'éleveur' on the stall sign rather than 'revendeur' to ensure you're getting farm-direct product.

Violet garlic from nearby Beaumont-de-Lomagne, a protected IGP variety with a mild, almost sweet flavour, is sold in plaited bunches and makes an easy, fragrant souvenir that travels well.

Several stalls sell Armagnac from small family domaines not found in any shop — producers are usually happy to offer a small tasting if you ask politely in French.

Market Rhythm & Eating

The market is at its busiest and best between 8 am and 11 am; by noon the stalls begin to pack up and the best produce is long gone, so arrive early.

A cluster of food stands near the covered halles serve hot merguez sandwiches, grilled boudin noir and plastic cups of local rosé — a perfectly Gascon breakfast if you're willing to lean into it.

The adjacent Halle aux Herbes, a 19th-century iron-and-glass structure, houses permanent cheese, charcuterie and bakery vendors open Tuesday to Saturday for mid-week shopping.
