Onsen Hot Pools & Day Spa
Perched on the cliffs above the Shotover River, Onsen Hot Pools pairs Japanese bathing tradition with pure New Zealand mountain water — and the view from your private cedar tub is frankly unfair. It is the perfect counterpoint to a day of Queenstown adrenaline.
A Private Pool, a Canyon View, Zero Crowds
Opened in 2007, Onsen has 14 pools in total. Nine are the original cedar-lined private tubs whose doors swing open directly over the Shotover Canyon — a design that makes the gorge feel like your personal infinity view. The water is pure mountain-sourced and heated to around 38°C in summer, nudging up to 39.8°C in the depths of winter.
Book an evening session and the canyon walls dissolve into darkness while the Southern Hemisphere sky fills the frame above you — a stargazing experience that costs nothing extra and is entirely accidental.
Beyond the Soak
Onsen's day spa offers a full menu of face and body treatments delivered by qualified therapists, so you can pair a 45-minute soak with a massage and turn a pit-stop into a half-day retreat.
A complimentary shuttle runs to and from central Queenstown, making the 10-minute trip to 160 Arthurs Point Road effortless even if you haven't rented a car.
