Fort Stanton Park Overlook
Perched on one of Anacostia's highest ridges, Fort Stanton Park delivers a sweeping panorama of the Capitol dome, the Washington Monument and the city skyline that most tourists never find because they never cross the river. The grassy hilltop is quiet, breezy and completely free.
History Beneath Your Feet
Fort Stanton was one of the Civil War earthwork forts built to defend Washington from Confederate attack. The earthworks have largely been reclaimed by grass and trees, but interpretive signs explain the original gun placements and troop positions.
Walking the perimeter trail you can still trace the outline of the fort's bastions in the undulating ground — a subtle, eerie connection to 1861 that hits differently once you know what you're standing on.
Best Times and Practical Tips
Sunrise and golden hour are exceptional here: the Capitol dome catches the light beautifully from this angle and the hill is almost always deserted at dawn.
The park connects to the broader Anacostia Riverwalk Trail system, so you can combine a hilltop visit with a flat riverside walk along the Anacostia River for a varied half-day outing.
