Cerro del Cristo del Remedio
On the hill directly opposite the castle, a large Christ statue marks the highest accessible viewpoint in the town itself. It is far less visited than the castle yet delivers an equally spectacular — and uniquely framed — view with the fortress as the centrepiece of the panorama.
The view and how to reach it
A quiet road and then a short footpath lead up from the residential neighbourhood of El Rabal to the statue and its surrounding terrace. The walk takes under 20 minutes from the town centre and the path is well signed. From the top, the castle fills the foreground, the old town's terracotta rooftops spread below it, and the flat Manchego plain stretches to the horizon in every direction.
This is the classic composition for photographing the castle: you are level with the keep rather than looking up at it, so the full drama of the limestone crag is visible. Sunrise and the golden hour before sunset produce the most vivid light on the fortress walls.
What else is up here
The Cristo del Remedio itself is a mid-20th-century stone figure, modest in artistic terms but meaningful to locals — a small pilgrimage chapel sits beside it and is occasionally open. The surrounding scrubland is quiet enough to hear larks and, in spring, the hillside is dotted with wild rosemary and lavender.
Bring water and a wide-angle lens. There are no facilities at the top, but the walk down takes you naturally through the old quarter, making it easy to combine with a coffee stop in Plaza de Santa María.
