Joe's Lifestyle & Butchery, 11th Avenue
There is no more joyful, smoke-scented, music-thumping introduction to South African township food culture than a Sunday afternoon at Joe's Lifestyle & Butchery on 11th Avenue. Pick your cut from the butcher's counter, hand it to the grill master, crack open a cold one, and let the DJ take care of the rest.
The Shisa Nyama Ritual
Shisa nyama — literally 'burn the meat' in Zulu — is a uniquely South African institution, and Joe's is widely regarded as one of the finest examples in Alexandra. The format is beautifully simple: you choose your uncooked meat from the butchery, pay for it, and then either braai it yourself over the open fire or have one of the grill masters do it for you, eating on the premises with sides of pap, chakalaka, and salad.
The result is meat cooked exactly as you like it, eaten outdoors at a plastic table surrounded by locals who have been coming here for years. It is as far from a tourist restaurant as it is possible to get, and all the better for it.
Sunday is the Main Event
Joe's seating is casual and entirely outdoors, which means the atmosphere shifts completely depending on the day — but Sunday is the unmissable session, when a DJ spins Afro-house and amapiano and well-known faces from Johannesburg's music and entertainment scene pull up in their cars for a long, leisurely afternoon. The energy is festive, warm, and utterly infectious.
The establishment has hosted prominent artists and DJs over the years, earning it a reputation that extends well beyond Alexandra's borders. Arrive by 1pm on a Sunday to get a good table before the crowds build.
Beyond the Braai
Joe's is also the official starting point for the JoziWalk guided heritage tour of old Alex, which departs from the butchery, winds through the township's oldest streets past homes once occupied by Nelson Mandela, Samora Machel, and Hugh Masekela, and then returns to Joe's for a shisa nyama meal at the end — possibly the best tour-and-lunch combination in Johannesburg.
The surrounding streets on 11th Avenue are lined with spaza shops, street vendors, and the general organised chaos of kasi commerce — worth a wander before or after your meal.
