Luxor Old Market Street (Souq el-Luxor)
A 20-minute felucca ride and taxi hop from Al-Zainiyya brings you to the East Bank's Old Market Street — Luxor's most atmospheric souk, where alabaster workshops, spice mountains, and hand-painted papyrus stalls crowd a labyrinth of narrow lanes behind Luxor Temple. This is where locals actually shop, not just tourists.
What to Look For
The souq is best for alabaster carvings (Luxor sits atop some of Egypt's finest alabaster deposits), hand-woven galabiyyas, cartouche jewellery, and loose spices sold by weight — cumin, dried hibiscus for karkadeh tea, and pungent black seed are all exceptional value.
Handwoven rugs and fragrant Egyptian perfume oils sold in small glass bottles make compact, lightweight souvenirs. Bargaining is not just accepted but expected — open with roughly half the asking price and enjoy the theatre of it.
Eating and Drinking in the Souq
Duck into one of the tiny fuul and ta'meya (falafel) stands tucked between the stalls for a 20-EGP breakfast that no hotel buffet can match. Fresh sugarcane juice pressed to order is the ideal antidote to the mid-morning heat.
For a sit-down meal nearby, Sofra restaurant on Mohamed Farid Street — a 10-minute walk from Luxor Temple — is widely recommended for classic Egyptian dishes like baba ganoush and stuffed pigeon served with flatbread in a lantern-lit setting.
Timing Your Visit
The souq wakes up properly around 9 am and runs until late evening, with a lull in the fiercest afternoon heat. Evening is particularly lively, when locals finish work and the lanes fill with families, street food vendors, and the smell of grilling kofta.
From Al-Zainiyya, take the local ferry across the Nile (a few EGP) and then a short taxi or calèche ride north along the Corniche to reach the market lanes behind Luxor Temple.
