Springfield sits in the residential middle ground of Rotorua — the kind of suburb where the streets are quiet, the houses are mostly post-war bungalows, and the geothermal smell that defines the wider city occasionally drifts in on the breeze. It is not the destination itself so much as the place you are staying while you explore everything around it.

That proximity is the point. Te Puia is 1.6 kilometres away. The Redwoods are 3.2. Rotorua International Stadium is less than a kilometre down the road. Springfield functions as a calm base — low-key, walkable to some things, and a short drive to most others.

💛 What travellers fall for

People who stay here more than once tend to appreciate the lack of foot traffic on the residential streets — it makes the return from a full day at the Redwoods or Te Puia feel genuinely restorative. The Springfield Golf Club on Devon Street is worth a look if you play: a par-70 course that has been here in some form since 1948, and still runs at a pace the big resort courses don't.

Good to know
Springfield is best reached by car from central Rotorua — it is a short drive and gives you flexibility for the surrounding attractions. Summer (December–February) offers the most sunshine, with January the driest month. There is no single landmark here demanding a dedicated visit; build it into a wider Rotorua itinerary.

The story

How Springfield came to be

The earliest residential buildings in Springfield date to the 1920s, though the suburb took its main shape in the 1970s, when a wave of housing construction filled out the streets. It is an ordinary suburban timeline — growth following the expansion of Rotorua as a regional centre.

The one institution with a documented founding is the Springfield Golf Club, formally established on 13 November 1947. The course itself was developed from 1948 on Devon Street West — a par-70 layout running to 5,655 yards. A new clubhouse followed in 1967, and an automatic watering system was installed around the greens in 1973, modest milestones that nonetheless mark a club now into its eighth decade.

When to go

Summers are mild rather than hot — expect highs around 22–23°C in January and February, with around eight hours of sun on a good day. Winters are cool and damp, with July daytime temperatures sitting at about 13°C and rain distributed fairly evenly across the year, so a waterproof layer is useful in any season.
