Sand Lake Road is the kind of street that keeps Orlando's tourist economy moving — literally. Running east–west as State Road 482 through south Orlando, it threads together the convention center corridor, the theme-park fringes, and a strip of restaurants that has quietly outlasted trends for decades. The intersection with I-4 is the busiest interchange in Central Florida, around 115,000 vehicles a day, which tells you something about how central this road is to the region's daily arithmetic.

What makes it worth your attention is Restaurant Row, a stretch of more than two dozen places to eat that sits close enough to International Drive to catch the tourist overflow but has enough regulars to keep standards honest. Christini's Ristorante Italiano has been here over 45 years. Chatham's Place has been serving continental cuisine since 1988. These are not pop-ups.

💛 What travellers fall for

People who return to the convention center circuit tend to treat Restaurant Row as their off-campus dining room. The consistent advice: book Christini's or Chatham's on the first night before you lose the energy to plan ahead, then use the SunRail station on weekday mornings if you need to move north without adding to that 38,000-vehicle daily count on the road itself.

Good to know
SunRail runs Monday through Friday only, with the first departures just after 6 am and 30-minute frequency during peak hours. Lynx bus links 11, 42, and 111 connect to Orlando International Airport. Avoid driving the I-4 interchange during morning and evening rush — the congestion here is well-documented and a new interchange project won't finish until late 2027.

The story

How Sand Lake Road came to be

Sand Lake Road exists in the public record primarily as infrastructure. As State Road 482, it has long served as the surface connector between Orlando's tourist corridor and its southern suburbs. The SunRail commuter station, built on previously undeveloped land just north of the road on Orange Avenue, began construction in 2013 and opened as the southern terminus of the line before service was extended further south to Poinciana on July 30, 2018.

The road's commercial identity has been shaped more by longevity than by any single moment. Restaurant Row accumulated its two-dozen-plus restaurants over decades of proximity to the convention center and theme parks. A $114.6 million Florida Turnpike interchange project is currently under construction, with a $30 million pedestrian bridge also planned at the International Drive intersection — signals that the road is still being actively renegotiated between cars and the people who walk beside them.

When to go

Orlando's south corridor runs hot and humid from late spring through September, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that pass quickly but drench thoroughly. If you're moving between restaurants and parking lots in summer, keep that in mind. Winter months — December through February — are drier and considerably more comfortable for any time spent outside.
